...but I'm unsure of how to classify it. evening, what do you think?
-
No, not an industry. If it is manufacturing it is likely 311942 Spice and Extract Manufacturing. If it is growing the spice it would be 111219 Other Vegetable (except Potato) and Melon Farming.
Thanks for marking it for deletion!

Evening As you're somewhat of an Expert, can I pick your brain ? I want to download an image to Freebase from my personal database picture collection, and want to licence it as Fair Use. I've used it for Flixster, but Freebase is quite (rightly) strict about copyright. The photo is of actor Robert Douglas (1909 - 1999) and is from the 40s, and was bought off an Ebay collector. It is NOT however, a studio copyrighted film still or anything like that, it's just one of a number I guess that were used to send out autographs to film fans. This one is personally autographed (not a printed image). There are no markings of any kind on the front or back as to ownership, and was NOT bought from someone who insisted on (or claimed) copyright for themselves. I know, as I have other photos already, to which I'm required to acknowledge ownership. robbiedf

Hi robbiedf. Unfortunately, I don't know much about image copyrights, so I don't have an answer for you. Another expert mentioned that the US government's copyright website may be able to offer some help. If that doesn't help, then maybe someone here with more image copyright experience can chime in.
-
robbiedf,
Firstly, as a disclaimer, IANAL and, as always, on these sorts of matters I'd suggest you seek qualified legal advice.
However, it seems that you only have a single copy of a photo and don't have the original, the rights to reproduce the photo nor an agreement with the estate regarding rights of publicity, and so forth.
I'd say uploading as fair use might be reasonable if it meets a few criteria - such as there's no other freely available image for the topic, the use on freebase doesn't compete with the commercial opportunities for the photo, the photo you have provides greater understanding of the subject matter etc.. etc.. In technical terms, fair use on freebase means that it will be displayed as thumbnail size.
Also see Wikipedia, which has some examples of criteria for non-free use, and the corresponding guidelines

Iain Cheers for that. I think (really and truly) I'm probably on safe ground with Robert Douglas, as believe you me there's not a lot out there in the public domain, since he's not that high profile. I'd be very surprised if someone objected !! My intention was to enhance the profile on Freebase and as you say would provide a "greater understanding of the subject." I think with what I've seen uploaded elsewhere (findagrave, com for example), no-one else seems to really be worried. I of course, do worry, and tend to be over cautious. robbiedf (Alison)

Hello, I"m Spencer.
I have proposed that Freebase give the Expert's group write privileges on abandoned types and bases.
This policy change would mean experts would be able to reciprocate, co-type, rename, etc the good, but incomplete work done by other users after they have lost interest in maintaining their types. The complaint I have heard from others, and that I have myself, is that uncontroversial property suggestions go unresponded to very often, thwarting our efforts to collaborate. This is a huge problem on Freebase, as our only solution currently is to redo the persons' type or base from scratch, which both frustrates users and denormalizes the database.
I'm trying to get a feel for what the experts think on this issue. Are stale bases and types a problem? If so, are there clever ways of solving this without destabilizing freebase?
Freebase is an important project and I feel we are due for a policy change of some consequence.
Please let me know what you think.
thanks,

Hi there. I've started loading the National Register of Historic Places data into the production database. Since New England rules and Cali drools, I've started in the Northeast and VT is one of the first states. I figured since you were pretty active, you could give me a heads up if anything was funky.
If you've got a few minutes to spare can you check out http://usnris.freebase.com but more importantly just keep an eye out for anything that looks wierd as you cruise around the Vermont topics.
At this point I'm not creating new topics, so you wont see anything too dramatic, but you should see the existing topics annotated with more richness. For example, if you look at the Justin Smith Morrill Homestead, you'll see that not only has the National Register info been added, but it's got an architectural style, a list of significant years, and a link to the owner.
Let me know if you see anything wierd or that needs improving. Thanks!
-
Very cool. So far things look great. I'll let you know if I come across anything that needs fixing. Thanks for a great base!
-
@tfmorris looking good! I had a couple of small suggestions for your own NRIS listing type: firstly, you could make a companion type for "NRIS significant person" and use that as the expected type for the significant people link, and reciprocate it, and secondly, the years should be date fields, not a text field, so you can then eg. map it on a timeline, search for NRIS-listed sites prior to 1800, or whatever. Otherwise, it's looking great! The stuff that's going into the commons looks fine to me.

Skud - please see my comments in the Protected Sites domain. I've been posting stuff there as I did the work in an attempt to get it reviewed, but there hasn't been any interest.

Thought this resource might interest you: Bird Checklists of the United States. This is a federal government site with data in a standard format so it should be legal and relatively easy to import. I may be able to get the actual data behind that website pretty easily. Let me know if you want it.
-
Oops. It may be tougher to get this data into Freebase than I thought. See this page regarding copyright.
-
I believe that documents produced by agencies of the US government are in the public domain -- http://www.usgs.gov/laws/info_policies.html
The SF Bay NWR data came from that site, and was produced by the USFWS and I understand is in the public domain.
-
see also: http://www.doi.gov/disclaimer.html
-
I haven't checked to see if all of the checklists were published by the US government. I'll make a call next week when I'm back in the office to find out about getting the data.
-
Just an update that I'm following up on a couple new leads next week.
-
Heard back. Data is fine to import but needs to be scraped from the web pages. No tables exist outside of the html pages.
-
Lovely.
I can help turn copied data from websites into tables (either word or excel...can maybe even use google docs to share easily). Have done that many times. Doing a spot check of the lists, it looks like they all follow the same format (and really, all in HTML??? craziness).
Those are a lot of lists, though! Where do you want to begin?
-
Great! I'm especially interested in the Southeastern US and Appalachian mountains. xtine would probably prioritize the SF Bay area. I think this is a great application so whatever order you want is good for me. Thanks!
-
I am writing a birdlisting web application and I would love to have a birdlist for each state in freebase. Has anything been done so far on the filtering of all this data? Willing to help.
-
Evening has done quite a bit to pull the data from the USGS site into tables. You may want to ask this question in here too.
-
I've got 25 lists into spreadsheet format, but we haven't gotten them into Freebase yet. If I can somehow get your email, I can give you permission to view the lists in Google Docs.

I just noticed you typed a heap of things as roads which aren't roads. Eg. Toulouse, Athens, and a number of other European cities. Do you remember what you were doing that would have caused this? It's pretty weird.
If you go to the Roads type and sort so the newest are first, yours show up on the first page or thereabouts, if you're looking for an easy way to find them.
-
That is strange! I was adding major cities and end points to some of the E-roads. The end points are cities, right? otherwise, I have no idea what happened!
-
ACK! That's exactly it. I put the city in the road field in the end points. I don't remember it being like that before...need to start paying better attention!
Thanks for alerting me to the problem, I'll go fix them all now!
